The Death Of A Legend – Sir Bobby Robson

Bobby RobsonThere are many ‘legends’ in football some of which are debatable, but Bobby Robson genuinely is a legend. Born on the 18th February 1933 Robert William Robson in County Durham where he began his playing career for Langley Park Juniors.

In 1950 Bobby signed his first contract, opting to play for London based Fulham rather than local team Middlesborough. In 1955 he moved on to West Bromwich Albion. Eventually in 1962 he moved back to Fulham. Between 1957 and 1962 Bobby played for England, racking up 20 caps and 4 goals.

Robson then went on to manage various teams;
1965 – Staff Coach – English FA
1968 – Manager – Fulham
1969 – 1982 – Manager – Ipswich Town
1982 – 1990 – Manager – England
1990 – 1992 – Manager – PSV Eindhoven
1992 – 1993 – Manager – Sporting Lisbon
1994 – 1996 – Manager – FC Porto
1996 – 1997 – Manager – Barcelona
1997 – Technical Director – Barcelona
1998 – Manager – PSV Eindhoven
1999 – 2004 – Manager – Newcastle United

Bobby lead a successful and happy life both on and off the pitch, raising three children with his loving wife. However in 1991 Bobby was sadly diagnosed with cancer, and he has suffered ever since, beating bowel cancer in 1992, a malignant melanoma in 1995 and a tumour in his right lung and a brain tumour, both in 2006. Ever the decent man, he battled on and even set up his foundation http://www.sirbobbyrobsonfoundation.org.uk/

Eventually after an 18 year battle with cancer Bobby passed away at a grand age of 76. You can finally rest in peace Bobby, our thoughts and best wishes are with your family and friends. Your achievements and your personality will never be forgotten.
